Worx 20V Cordless Random Orbital Sander WX823L Review: Professional Results Without the Cord

When we first unboxed the Worx WX823L, we weren’t expecting much from a cordless orbital sander at this price point. But after putting it through weeks of rigorous testing on everything from refinishing old furniture to prepping kitchen cabinets, we discovered a tool that punches well above its weight class. This brushless cordless orbital sander has become our go-to for projects where mobility matters without sacrificing power.

What Makes This Sander Stand Out From the Competition

The WX823L isn’t just another cordless sander trying to replicate corded performance—it’s a thoughtfully engineered tool designed specifically for the realities of cordless work. The brushless motor technology immediately caught our attention during testing. Unlike traditional brushed motors, this design delivers consistent power throughout the battery life while generating less heat and extending the tool’s lifespan considerably.

During our hands-on testing, we noticed the sander maintained its 12,000 OPM (orbits per minute) speed even when working on dense hardwoods. There’s no frustrating power drop-off as the battery depletes, which is a common complaint with lesser cordless sanders.

Brushless Motor Technology: Why It Actually Matters

We’ve tested dozens of sanders over the years, and the brushless motor in the WX823L delivers tangible benefits you’ll notice immediately. During a full day of cabinet refinishing, the motor stayed cool to the touch while cheaper brushed motors would have overheated and required frequent breaks.

The efficiency gains translate directly to runtime. With the included 4.0 Ah battery, we consistently achieved 35-45 minutes of continuous sanding on medium-pressure applications. That’s enough to complete most furniture pieces or several cabinet doors without stopping to recharge. The brushless design also means virtually zero maintenance—no brushes to replace, no carbon dust buildup, just reliable performance project after project.

Complete Kit: Everything You Need to Start Sanding

One of the aspects we genuinely appreciated about the WX823L is that Worx includes everything necessary to start working immediately. The kit contains:

– One WX823L brushless orbital sander
– One 4.0 Ah 20V battery
– One 2A fast charger
– 150, 120, and 80 grit sanding discs
– Dust collection bag
– Hook-and-loop sanding pad

We’ve purchased too many “bare tool” options over the years that required hunting down compatible batteries and chargers separately. Worx eliminates that frustration entirely. The 2A fast charger brought our depleted 4.0 Ah battery back to full charge in approximately 120 minutes during our tests—fast enough to swap batteries during lunch on larger projects.

Real-World Performance: Our Testing Results

We put the WX823L through its paces across multiple projects to see how it performs beyond manufacturer specifications. Here’s what we discovered:

Furniture Refinishing Project

Our first major test involved stripping and refinishing an old oak dresser. Starting with 80-grit paper to remove the existing finish, the sander removed decades of varnish efficiently. The 5-inch sanding pad covered surface area quickly, and the random orbital action prevented any circular scratch patterns even when we applied extra pressure.

The ergonomic grip became especially important during this multi-hour project. The rubberized overmold areas provided secure purchase even as our hands got sweaty, and at just 4.2 pounds with battery, fatigue was minimal compared to our heavier corded model.

Cabinet Door Preparation

For kitchen cabinet refinishing, we needed smooth, paint-ready surfaces. Using the included 120-grit discs, we prepped twelve cabinet doors in one battery charge. The variable speed control (which we’ll discuss more below) allowed us to dial back the aggression when working near edges and corners.

The dust collection system captured approximately 70-75% of the sanding dust according to our observations. While not perfect, this is actually quite good for a cordless sander. We still recommend wearing a mask and using shop ventilation, but the dust bag significantly reduced cleanup time.

Deck Refinishing Challenge

The true cordless advantage became apparent when we tackled deck rail refinishing. No extension cords, no power limitations, just grab-and-go convenience. We worked through approximately 40 linear feet of railing on a single charge, easily maneuvering around posts and balusters without cord management headaches.

Variable Speed Control: Precision When You Need It

The variable speed dial located near the power switch proved more useful than we initially anticipated. Rather than offering arbitrary speed settings, it provides meaningful control across different materials and applications.

For softwoods like pine, we dialed the speed down to prevent over-aggressive material removal. On hardwoods and when stripping finishes, full speed delivered optimal efficiency. The dial clicks positively through its range, so you can set it by feel without looking—a small detail that matters when you’re focused on your workpiece.

During our testing, lower speeds also reduced vibration substantially, which decreased hand fatigue on longer sanding sessions. We found ourselves using the mid-range speeds most frequently, reserving maximum speed for only the toughest material removal tasks.

Dust Collection System Performance

Let’s be honest: no sander’s dust collection system captures 100% of the dust, and the WX823L is no exception. However, Worx engineered a system that actually works reasonably well without requiring external vacuum hookup.

The included dust bag attaches securely to the sander body via a twist-lock mechanism. During operation, the orbital action and strategically placed dust ports channel debris into the bag. We found it captured the majority of fine dust, though larger particles occasionally escaped.

The dust bag itself features a semi-transparent design, allowing you to monitor fill level without detaching it. After about 15-20 minutes of heavy sanding, you’ll want to empty it. The bag features a zippered bottom for easy dumping—much better than the friction-fit designs that spray dust everywhere when you remove them.

For professional applications or particularly dusty projects, the sander’s dust port accepts standard vacuum hose adapters. We connected it to our shop vac during the dresser refinishing project and achieved nearly complete dust capture.

Battery Performance and Runtime Analysis

The included 4.0 Ah battery represents a sweet spot for cordless sanders. It provides sufficient capacity for meaningful work sessions without adding excessive weight to the tool.

In our controlled runtime test, we achieved the following results:

– Light pressure sanding (finish work): 42-48 minutes
– Medium pressure sanding (typical use): 35-40 minutes
– Heavy pressure sanding (aggressive stock removal): 28-32 minutes

These numbers align closely with our real-world project experiences. The 4.0 Ah capacity outperforms smaller 2.0 Ah batteries significantly while remaining substantially lighter than 5.0 Ah or 6.0 Ah options.

The battery features Worx’s standard 20V platform design, meaning it’s compatible with other Worx 20V tools. If you’re already invested in the Worx ecosystem, you can share batteries across multiple tools. The fuel gauge on the battery itself displays remaining charge via three LED indicators—a simple but effective system.

Charging time with the included 2A charger averaged about 120 minutes from completely depleted to fully charged. While faster chargers exist,

    Works well.
Works well taking old finish from furniture. You should buy the sandpaper package offered as a bundle. Buy a good battery. I bought the cheapest one and it dies every 20 minutes.

Great new tool kit from WORX, with one pesky catch
Having purchased a number of WORX tools for light-medium homeowner use, I eagerly purchased the WX820L.9 Sandeck, and I have not been disappointed. It runs with the existing 20v battery system, it is light and well-balanced in the hand, and it has great endurance for several projects I already have tackled. The price seems fair for the bare tool, as I already have several compatible batteries and chargers (thanks WORX for this pricing option). Also nice, no dangling cords to mess with, either. My only downgrade in rating, is because the product illustration and what you actually get may not match. Apparently, if you order the WX820L.9 bare tool (no battery and no charger) from Amazon, the pictured WORX zipper bag is not included; however, if you order the same WX820L.9 directly from WORX, the bag is included at the same price point. While a fairly small issue, what you see is what you should get. Amazon replaced my original WX820L.9, but the new box still did not contain the bag, so I have kept the original and returned the replacement. After contacting WORX, and once they verified my purchase and product registration, WORX did offer the bag in a separate shipment, which should arrive soon. All in all, the Sandeck 20v sander kit still is one of the best and versatile WORX tools for the money. Just be careful to make sure what really is included. Bag or no bag, though, this still is a little jewel to add to your WORX tool collection.

Nice way to have multiple sanders in one battery operated device. No more cords saves storage space. Battery powerful. I didn’t notice any strength difference between this and my other sanders. Battery same as other Worx tools. Very good buy for the money. Only down side were the directions. It took a while to figure out how to change the heads. You use the handle on top and ROTATE it to unscrew the head you are changing. The picture on the directions wasn’t clear to me.I have multiple Worx tools that I love. The only one I ever returned was the chain saw.

    Didn’t work.
Bought an opened box thinking they wouldn’t sell a non-working product. Product didnt work. Was a pain to return but did return the item. Would never buy a opened box product again.

Poor form from Amazon on shipping out a clearly used / previously opened item that was poorly cleaned/packaged. Further the description says it is designed for the Worx 20V battery architecture but my existing Worx batteries do no fit.

La duración de la batería podría mejorar, si la usas al máximo, dura 1 hora con 30. Pero solo hay que considerarlo en los proyectos y ya.
