Why This Palm Nailer Stands Out From the Competition

During our hands-on testing, the Milwaukee 2458-21 immediately distinguished itself from traditional pneumatic palm nailers. The cordless design freed us from the hassles of air hoses and compressors—a liberation we didn’t fully appreciate until we were working in a crawl space with limited room. The M12 battery system delivers consistent power that rivals corded alternatives, yet the entire kit weighs just a fraction of what we’re used to hauling around job sites.

What truly impressed us was the tool’s ability to drive 8d to 16d nails into solid lumber without hesitation. We tested it extensively on 2×10 joists and found the driving power remained consistent throughout the battery cycle, something that can’t be said for all cordless nailers in this category.

Key Features That Make a Real Difference

Compact Design That Actually Fits Where You Need It

At just 9.75 inches in length, this palm nailer slips into spaces where traditional framing nailers simply can’t reach. We found ourselves reaching for it constantly when installing joist hangers, hurricane ties, and metal connectors. The narrow profile means you can work flush against walls, joists, and other obstructions without awkward angles or compromised driving force.

M12 REDLITHIUM Battery Technology

Milwaukee includes a 1.5Ah M12 battery with the kit, and we were genuinely surprised by its runtime. During our testing, we drove approximately 150 nails on a single charge when working with standard framing applications. The battery charges quickly—about 30 minutes to full capacity—so downtime is minimal. Plus, if you’re already invested in the M12 ecosystem, this tool integrates seamlessly with your existing batteries.

Superior Control and Precision

The palm-grip design gives you exceptional control over nail placement. Unlike traditional nailers where you’re looking down a long nose, the 2458-21 positions your hand directly behind the driving point. We found this especially valuable when working overhead or in confined spaces where accuracy matters. The tool’s sequential firing mechanism ensures you won’t accidentally discharge nails, adding a critical safety element we appreciated on every project.

Lock-On Button for Extended Use

Milwaukee thoughtfully included a lock-on button that proved invaluable during repetitive nailing tasks. When installing dozens of joist hangers, we engaged this feature and worked much more efficiently without finger fatigue. It’s a small detail that makes a significant difference during long workdays.

Real-World Performance: How It Handled Our Toughest Tests

We deliberately pushed this palm nailer beyond typical use cases to see where it excelled and where it might struggle. Here’s what we discovered:

**Joist Hanger Installation:** This is where the 2458-21 truly shines. We installed over 40 joist hangers during a deck project, and the compact size allowed us to position nails perfectly in those tight spaces. Every nail seated flush without splitting the metal connectors—a common issue with less controlled tools.

**Framing Applications:** While not designed to replace a full-size framing nailer, the Milwaukee palm nailer handled framing tasks admirably. We successfully toenailed studs and assembled small framing projects with ease. The key is understanding this tool complements rather than replaces your framing nailer.

**Metal Connectors and Hurricane Ties:** The precision control made fastening metal connectors almost enjoyable. We could place the tip exactly where needed without worrying about marring surfaces or missing the target in tight corners.

**Hardwood Applications:** We tested the nailer on oak trim work and found it performed well, though harder woods naturally consumed more battery power. For occasional hardwood use, it’s perfectly capable; for extensive hardwood projects, keep a spare battery handy.

What Customers Are Saying: Real Feedback That Validates Our Experience

After completing our own testing, we dove into customer reviews for the Milwaukee M12 Cordless Palm Nailer Kit 2458-21 Battery Included to see if other users shared our enthusiasm. The feedback largely mirrored our findings, with several consistent themes emerging:

Professional contractors consistently praise the tool’s ability to access tight spaces that pneumatic alternatives can’t reach. One framing contractor mentioned he now keeps this in his belt for metal connector work, having replaced his pneumatic palm nailer entirely for these applications.

DIY enthusiasts love the cordless convenience, with many noting they can tackle projects without dragging out compressors and hoses. Several reviewers mentioned using it for deck building, specifically calling out joist hanger installation as the perfect application—exactly what we experienced.

The most common criticism we found echoes our own observation: battery life could be longer for all-day professional use. However, most users solve this by keeping a spare M12 battery on hand, which seems like a reasonable solution given the tool’s other advantages.

Several users mentioned the learning curve for achieving consistent nail depth, particularly compared to pneumatic models. We noticed this too initially, but found that adjusting striking technique based on material density became second nature after a dozen or so nails.

Long-term durability gets consistent praise, with contractors reporting years of reliable service. This reliability factor gave us additional confidence in recommending this tool for professional applications, not just occasional home use.

Complete Kit Contents: Everything You Need to Start Working

Milwaukee packages the 2458-21 as a complete kit, which we appreciated for immediate productivity:

– Milwaukee 2458-20 M12 Cordless Palm Nailer (tool only)
– M12 REDLITHIUM 1.5Ah Battery Pack
– M12 Lithium-Ion Battery Charger
– Heavy-Duty Carrying Case

The included case is genuinely protective—not just a throwaway box. It’s survived dozens of trips in our work truck without damage to the tool. The foam interior keeps everything organized and protected from the chaos of a typical job site.

Professional Tips We Learned Through Extended Use

After extensive testing, we’ve developed several techniques that maximize this tool’s effectiveness:

**Battery Management:** Keep your spare battery in your pocket during cold weather. We noticed reduced performance when batteries got cold, but body-temperature batteries maintained consistent power.

**Nail Selection:** The tool accepts 8d to 16d nails, but we found 10d and 12d nails offer the sweet spot between driving power and battery efficiency for most applications.

**Maintenance Matters:** After every significant use, we blow out any sawdust and debris from the nail channel. This simple step prevents jams and maintains consistent performance.

**Positioning Technique:** Apply steady pressure before triggering. The tool works best when you’re pushing firmly against the work surface, creating stable contact that ensures straight driving and proper seating.

Where This Tool Excels (and Where It Doesn’t)

Best Applications:

– Joist hanger and metal connector installation
– Toenailing in tight spaces
– Overhead work where maneuverability matters

    Pretty good
This works really well, and the battery runtime is really good, even with the small battery. If there is a complaint, it’s that its profile is kinda tall. It doesn’t fit in some tight places a pneumatic one would, but for putting nails into hangers or fully sinking toenailing, it works great. Better than a hammer.
