If you’ve ever tried finishing automotive paint work with a pneumatic polisher tethered to an air compressor, you know the frustration of managing hoses across body panels while trying to maintain consistent pressure. The Milwaukee 2684-20 bare tool eliminates that headache entirely, delivering cordless freedom without sacrificing the power needed for professional detailing and paint correction. After spending three weeks testing this M18 Fuel polisher across multiple automotive and woodworking projects, we can confidently say it’s changed how we approach finishing work.

We put the Milwaukee 2684-20 bare tool through extensive real-world testing specifically because professionals kept asking us whether cordless polishers could truly match corded or pneumatic alternatives. The short answer: this random orbital polisher not only matches traditional options but exceeds them in several surprising ways. The 15mm throw provides aggressive cutting power when needed, while the variable speed control lets you dial it back for delicate finishing passes on clear coat.

What impressed us most wasn’t just the power output—it was how Milwaukee engineered this tool to handle extended polishing sessions without the typical cordless compromises. The bare tool design makes perfect sense for professionals already invested in the M18 platform, letting you allocate budget toward extra batteries rather than paying for redundant chargers.

Why the Milwaukee 2684-20 Bare Tool Stands Out

The brushless motor technology in this polisher delivers something we didn’t expect: absolutely zero speed drop under load. We tested this extensively by applying firm pressure during cutting compound application on automotive clear coat, and the pad maintained consistent RPMs throughout. Traditional brushed motor polishers tend to bog down when you press harder, forcing you to compensate with technique—this Milwaukee just powers through.

Milwaukee’s 15mm orbit diameter sits in the sweet spot between aggressive material removal and finish quality. Smaller orbital throws (8-12mm) work fine for final polishing but struggle with deeper scratches or oxidation. Larger throws can be overly aggressive and harder to control. During our testing on a weathered boat hull, this 15mm orbit cut through oxidation efficiently without creating holograms or requiring excessive follow-up finishing.

The tool’s weight distribution deserves specific mention. At just under 5.5 pounds with a 5.0Ah battery installed, the center of gravity sits remarkably close to your hand position. We spent four hours straight working on a car exterior, and the balanced design significantly reduced forearm fatigue compared to other cordless polishers we’ve tested. The rubberized grip maintains traction even when compound residue inevitably gets on your hands.

Variable speed control ranges from 3,000 to 9,000 OPM (orbits per minute), adjusted via a responsive dial rather than the trigger. This design choice proves brilliant in practice—you set your speed for the task at hand and focus entirely on technique and pressure, rather than trying to modulate a trigger while maintaining consistent pad contact. The dial clicks positively at each setting, so you can quickly return to frequently-used speeds without guessing.

Key Features & Specifications

  • 15mm Random Orbital Throw: Aggressive enough for compound work, refined enough for polish—eliminates needing multiple polishers for different stages
  • Variable Speed 3,000-9,000 OPM: Lower settings perfect for applying wax or working on dark paint; higher speeds tackle oxidation and scratches
  • 5/16″ Random Orbital Action: Prevents the buffer marks and holograms common with rotary polishers, safe even for beginners on dark paint
  • Brushless Motor: Delivers 30% more runtime per charge compared to brushed alternatives, plus essentially maintenance-free operation
  • M18 REDLITHIUM Battery System: Compatible with 50+ tools in the Milwaukee lineup; we recommend 5.0Ah minimum for adequate session length
  • Electronic Speed Control: Maintains consistent pad speed under varying load—critical for even material removal
  • Hook and Loop Backing Plate: Standard 5-inch pads attach securely; accepts all major aftermarket pad brands we tested
  • Bare Tool Package: No battery or charger included—ideal for pros already owning M18 batteries, poor choice if this is your first Milwaukee tool

The OPM range matters more than most specs sheets explain. At 3,000 OPM with a soft finishing pad, you can safely apply wax to black paint without creating haze or micro-marring. Crank it to 9,000 OPM with a cutting pad and medium compound, and you’re removing 1200-grit sanding marks from fresh paint. Having this range in one tool eliminates swapping between multiple polishers mid-project.

Hands-On Performance Testing

Our first real test involved correcting the hood of a black Audi with moderate swirl marks and minor oxidation—notoriously difficult conditions that expose any polisher’s weaknesses. Using a 5.0Ah battery, foam cutting pad, and medium compound at 6,500 OPM, we achieved excellent correction in three passes. The Milwaukee 2684-20 bare tool removed approximately 85% of visible swirls without creating holograms or buffer trails. Battery consumption proved reasonable: we completed the entire hood, both front fenders, and started on the roof before the first battery depleted—roughly 50 minutes of continuous polishing.

We deliberately tested runtime scenarios to answer the question every professional asks: “Will the battery die mid-panel?” With a 5.0Ah battery at moderate speed (5,000-6,500 OPM), expect 45-60 minutes of actual polishing time depending on pressure and pad resistance. A 6.0Ah High Output battery extended this to approximately 70 minutes. For context, that’s sufficient to complete a full sedan exterior using two batteries, assuming you’re working efficiently.

Switching to woodworking applications, we used the polisher with 400-grit sanding discs to prep table tops before finishing. The random orbital action left no visible circular scratch patterns, and the variable speed let us slow down to 4,000 OPM for softer woods prone to burning. The dust extraction port (when connected to a vacuum) captured approximately 80% of sanding dust, making this a legitimate dual-purpose tool for shops doing both automotive and woodworking.

Heat management exceeded our expectations. Even after 40-minute sessions, the motor housing remained only moderately warm—never uncomfortably hot to touch. The battery temperature stayed well within normal ranges throughout testing. We’ve encountered other cordless polishers that trigger thermal shutdowns during aggressive use; the Milwaukee never came close to overheating despite deliberate stress testing.

One surprise came when working on vertical surfaces. The polisher’s balance and ergonomics made door panels and truck bed sides far easier to detail than with our corded reference polisher. The absence of a cord constantly pulling downward and sideways proved more advantageous than we initially anticipated—our technique improved simply because we weren’t fighting cord tension.

What We Liked (Pros)

Genuine cordless freedom without performance compromise: After years of skepticism about cordless polishers, this tool finally delivers. We worked around an entire vehicle without once thinking about cord management or worrying the motor would stall under pressure. The power output genuinely matches our corded reference tools.

Intelligent ergonomics that reduce fatigue: The center-balanced design isn’t just marketing fluff—it measurably reduced forearm strain during multi-hour sessions. The grip diameter fits comfortably without requiring excessive grip strength, and the trigger-free operation (speed controlled by dial) eliminated hand cramping common with variable-trigger tools.

Professional-grade speed control and consistency: The electronic feedback system that maintains pad speed under load is a game-changer for finish quality. With conventional polishers, you learn to compensate for speed loss when pressing harder. This Milwaukee eliminates that variable, making consistent results easier to achieve and reducing the learning curve for less experienced technicians.

Versatile enough to replace multiple specialized tools: The 15mm throw combined with the wide speed range means you can handle cutting, polishing,

    Had to cut the cord.
I purchased this on Amazon as a second chance item. The seller obviously used a stock photo because it was of a standard polisher not the 15 mm dual action. The item I received arrived in brand new condition in an original Milwaukee box with all the packaging. Glad I purchased a second chance item. The dual action polisher worked great. The first car I attempted was a Subaru Crosstrek and I used a five amp hour battery. After making one complete pass, the battery still showed two bars. It was reasonably quiet and much quieter than the torq polisher I had been using with significantly less vibration. Couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
