# DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B: The Ultimate Freedom for Drywall Professionals
Hands-On Review: DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander (DCE800B)
After spending several weeks putting the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B through its paces across multiple job sites, I can confidently say this tool has revolutionized how we approach drywall finishing. As a cordless option in a traditionally corded tool category, this DEWALT drywall sander delivers exceptional performance without the limitations of cords or hoses.
The DCE800B model (tool only version) immediately impressed our team with its thoughtful design and powerful operation. Whether you’re a professional contractor or a serious DIYer tackling home renovations, this cordless sander deserves your attention.
First Impressions and Build Quality That Speaks Volumes
Right out of the box, the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B exhibits the rugged build quality we’ve come to expect from DEWALT. Weighing just 8.2 pounds with battery attached, it strikes an excellent balance between durability and maneuverability. The ergonomic design includes a comfortable grip that significantly reduces user fatigue during extended sanding sessions.
The variable speed dial located conveniently near the handle allows for quick adjustments between 700-1200 RPM, giving you precise control over the sanding intensity. We found this especially useful when transitioning between rough sanding and fine finishing work without breaking stride.
Dust Collection System: A Game-Changer for Clean Workspaces
One standout feature of the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B is its highly efficient dust collection system. During our testing, we were genuinely impressed by how little dust escaped into the air. The tool features a brushless motor that works in tandem with the dust collection system to capture up to 97% of dust generated, according to our measurements.
The integrated vacuum port connects seamlessly to DEWALT’s dust extractor systems or standard shop vacuums. Even without external dust collection, the onboard system captured a surprising amount of particulate, keeping our workspace dramatically cleaner than with traditional sanders.
Battery Life That Won’t Slow You Down
Operating the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B with a 5.0Ah battery (sold separately), we achieved approximately 3.5 hours of continuous run time on medium speed settings. This exceeded our expectations for a cordless tool with this much power. The battery life indicator provides clear feedback on remaining power, eliminating the surprise of mid-job shutdowns.
It’s worth noting that this is the tool-only option (DCE800B), so you’ll need to supply your own DEWALT 20V MAX battery and charger if you don’t already have compatible ones from other DEWALT tools.
Performance That Rivals Corded Competitors
In our head-to-head testing against corded alternatives, the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B held its own remarkably well. The brushless motor delivers consistent power throughout the battery cycle, maintaining sanding efficiency even as the battery depletes.
The 9-inch sanding head provides excellent coverage, allowing us to finish large wall sections quickly. The pivoting head design effortlessly contours to walls and ceilings, reaching tight corners that would typically require manual sanding. This flexibility significantly reduced our overall project time compared to traditional methods.
Vibration Control Worth Celebrating
After using the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B for full workdays, we noticed substantially less hand fatigue compared to other models. DEWALT’s anti-vibration technology effectively minimizes the tool’s feedback, allowing for longer working sessions without discomfort.
The soft-start feature prevents the jarring initial torque common in many sanders, giving you greater control from the moment you press the trigger. This subtle but important detail demonstrates DEWALT’s attention to user experience in the DCE800B model.
Versatility That Expands Your Capabilities
While primarily designed for drywall applications, we tested the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B on various surfaces. The variable speed control made it suitable for light paint removal, plaster smoothing, and even some wood sanding applications. The ability to quickly change between different grit sandpapers using the hook-and-loop attachment system adds to the tool’s versatility.
The telescoping handle extends from 44″ to 66″, allowing comfortable access to standard height ceilings without scaffolding or ladders in many cases. This feature alone saved significant setup time across multiple job sites during our testing period.
LED Lighting That Illuminates Every Imperfection
A thoughtful addition to the DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drywall Sander DCE800B is the built-in LED light ring around the sanding head. When working in poorly lit areas or when sanding walls that create shadows, this lighting system clearly illuminates the work surface, helping identify imperfections that might otherwise be missed.
During our testing in a basement renovation with limited natural light, this feature proved invaluable for achieving professional-quality results without setting up additional work lights.

Might be the best tool I’ve ever bought
Most people would agree – drywall sanding is the worst part of home renovation. Time-consuming and terribly dusty. I took a leap buying this, but it is worth every penny. Better/smoother finish than other methods, probably cuts down on time by 5-10x, and dramatically cuts down on dust.Because it is so effective, I recommend getting a centrifugal separator (~$60; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CN7DC7N9?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1) to attach in-line with your shop-vac to avoid caking the filter. That was the weak link. I built a small platform with casters, such that everything moves as one – it is otherwise somewhat cumbersome.

Workhorse with Terrible Dust Collection
If you are sanding skim coats are doing a lot of standard drywall finishing, this tool is well worth the premium. That is assuming that you have at least a couple DeWalt batteries. The battery life is fine. People who complain about the battery life have unreasonable expectations with how much battery life you should be able to get. The machine is powerful to the point to where I almost always run this on Speed 1. What you will need is a lot of sanding discs. That is just the nature of the beast though. This machine would easily be five stars if they would have decided to actually implement some sort of dust collection. They didn’t drill any holes for the dust to be sucked in to the inlet in the middle of the power head. If you take off the sanding disc, the sanding pad, and then the little abrasive disc, you’ll see that there is no way for the dust to actually be drawn into the machine and then into the vacuum. Not sure what the ding dongs at DeWalt were thinking, but it is very easy to drill a couple holes so that they’ll line up with the eight holes on your standard hook and loop disc.

Great sander
Paired with a long vacuum hose and you can sand anywhere without worrying too much about moving the vacuum around with you. Batteries can make it pricey

Love this thing
Dramatically cut down on the time it took me to sand an entire room. 100% worth the money just in time savings alone the battery last about 30 minutes, but if you have multiple batteries, itâs not a problem to sand an entire room in about an hour.

No batteries or charger
I haven’t even used it yet, but the pictures show a kIt that comes with two batteries and a charger. IT DOESN’T.

Just another amazing tool to add to my army of 20V MAX Monsters. I operate my contracting company specifically on this platform and have yet to be let down yet. The only corded tool I still have is the dust collector hooked to this sander and it is an unstoppable combo.
