There’s nothing worse than fighting with a corded sander in tight spaces or constantly hunting for the next outlet on a large project. After testing the IRONFIST random orbit sander across multiple refinishing jobs—from stripping old deck stain to smoothing cabinet doors—we found a cordless solution that actually delivers professional results without the premium price tag of the major brands.
What caught our attention was the compatibility with DeWalt 20V batteries (despite being labeled 21V, they’re interchangeable). If you’re already invested in the DeWalt ecosystem, this IRONFIST random orbit sander offers serious value. We put this 5 inch 3 speed orbital sander through real-world scenarios over several weeks to see if it could handle demanding professional use or if it’s just another budget tool with big promises.
The short answer: This sander punches well above its weight class. While it’s not replacing our pneumatic setup in the shop, it’s become our go-to for job site work and projects where mobility matters more than marathon sanding sessions.
Why the IRONFIST Random Orbit Sander for DeWalt Battery Stands Out
The battery compatibility is the real game-changer here. Rather than adding another battery platform to your collection, this sander works with the DeWalt 20V batteries you probably already own. We tested it with both 4Ah and 5Ah DeWalt packs, and both fit securely without any wobble or connection issues.
The 3 speed settings (8,000/10,000/12,000 OPM) provide more versatility than we expected. Low speed handled delicate veneer work without burning through the finish, while high speed tackled solid oak with aggressive material removal. Most budget sanders skip variable speed entirely, so having three distinct settings is a legitimate advantage.
Build quality surprised us. Yes, it’s lighter than premium models, but the housing feels solid—not the hollow, plasticky feel common in this price range. The grip texture provides secure control even when your hands are dusty, and the palm-style design reduces fatigue during extended use.
The included accessories package is genuinely useful, not throwaway junk. The 20 sandpaper discs span multiple grits (we received 80, 120, 180, and 240), and the hook-and-loop pad gripped aftermarket discs firmly. The three polishing sponges work surprisingly well for final finishing and wax application.
Key Features & Specifications
- 5-inch sanding pad diameter: The industry standard size means you’re not locked into proprietary sandpaper. Any 5-inch 8-hole disc works perfectly, keeping consumable costs low.
- 3-speed settings (8,000/10,000/12,000 OPM): Low for detail work and soft materials, medium for general sanding, high for aggressive stock removal. The speed selector is easy to adjust even while wearing gloves.
- DeWalt 20V battery compatible: Works with any DeWalt 20V MAX battery. We got 35-45 minutes of continuous use from a 5Ah battery at medium speed—enough for most job site tasks before needing a swap.
- 3/32-inch (2.4mm) orbit diameter: Standard orbit size delivers smooth finishes without excessive swirl marks. Not overly aggressive, which is actually ideal for finish work.
- Dust collection bag included: Attaches via a threaded collar. It captures about 70% of dust—decent for cordless operation, though serious work still benefits from shop vac attachment.
- Hook-and-loop pad system: Quick disc changes with secure grip. We had zero issues with discs flying off during testing, even at high speed.
- Weight: 2.8 lbs (without battery): Light enough for overhead work without shoulder fatigue, yet substantial enough to let the tool do the work without excessive pressure.
Hands-On Performance Testing
Deck Refinishing Project: We used this IRONFIST sander to prep 300 square feet of weathered cedar decking. Starting with 80-grit at high speed, it removed old stain and surface graying efficiently. A single 5Ah DeWalt battery lasted about 40 minutes of active sanding time—we went through three batteries to complete the project. The cordless convenience meant no extension cords to trip over or reposition, which saved genuine time.
The dust collection performed adequately outdoors. The bag filled quickly with coarse material but kept the immediate work area relatively clean. For indoor work, we’d absolutely recommend connecting a shop vac to the dust port (standard size fits most hoses).
Cabinet Door Smoothing: This is where the variable speed proved valuable. We dropped to the 8,000 OPM setting for sanding maple cabinet doors between primer coats. The lower speed prevented burn-through on edges and gave us better control for even coverage. The random orbit pattern left minimal swirl marks—barely visible even under raking light before final finish.
Furniture Restoration: We refinished an oak dining table, taking it from rough stripped wood to finish-ready. The 5-inch pad size provided good coverage without being unwieldy around table legs and corners. Progressive grits from 120 to 240 created a glass-smooth surface. Battery life was excellent for this type of intermittent use—we completed the entire table top on a single charge.
Extended Use Testing: After 90 minutes of continuous operation (swapping batteries as needed), the motor housing was warm but not concerning. No performance degradation or unusual vibration developed. The bearings stayed smooth, and pad rotation remained consistent.
One surprise: This sander is noticeably quieter than expected. It’s not whisper-quiet, but the pitch is less annoying than many corded models we’ve used. You can hold a conversation at normal volume while someone operates it nearby.
What We Liked (Pros)
- DeWalt battery compatibility eliminates platform lock-in: If you already run DeWalt cordless tools, this adds sanding capability without buying into another battery system. That’s $50-100 saved immediately on batteries and chargers you’d otherwise need.
- Legitimate 3-speed control for different materials: Not a gimmick—the speed differences are noticeable and useful. We actually used all three settings regularly depending on the task, which says something about the practical design.
- Exceptional value with included accessories: The 20 sandpaper discs and 3 polishing sponges are quality items, not throwaway freebies. That’s $15-20 worth of consumables you don’t need to buy immediately.
- Smooth operation with minimal vibration: Hand fatigue was significantly less than with cheaper orbital sanders. The balanced design and quality bearings make extended use comfortable—important for professional applications.
- Lightweight design doesn’t sacrifice capability: At 2.8 lbs before battery, it’s easy to control for overhead work or long sessions, yet it still has enough mass to sand effectively without excessive downward pressure.
What Could Be Better (Cons)
- Dust collection adequate but not exceptional: The included bag captures maybe 70% of dust—fine for outdoor work or quick jobs, but indoor professional use really needs a shop vac connection. The dust port fits standard hoses, so it’s an easy upgrade, but that’s an extra purchase.
- No battery or charger included: This is sold as a bare tool. If you don’t already own DeWalt 20V batteries, factor in $60-120 for a battery and charger. For existing DeWalt users, this is actually a pro since you’re not paying for redundant batteries.
- Not for heavy

Very serviceable makita-compatible palm sander
I bought this with some guessing that it would work with Makita 18V LXT batteries. I can confirm it does work fine with them. The included battery cannot be charged on a makita charger, but for $36 bucks, I don’t really care, I’ll just use the tool.It has a few annoyances:- Every time you turn the sander off, it resets to low speed. The next time you turn it on, you have to cycle through medium speed to get to high speed. It would be nice if it remembered the last speed, so you didn’t have to change the speed every time you turn it on.- The dust collection is… nonexistent. It includes a silly little dust bag, and there is a fan inside the sander that /should/ direct air into the bag, but its anemic to the point of pointlessness. It’s possible hooking up a actual vacuum to the dust port might improve things.Overall, I’m happy with what I bought, for the price.

be very careful about more batteries,
I ordered this, a pair of makita compatible betteries and a makita compatible charger. The 2AH battery it comes with can only be recharged by the wall wort charger that comes with it, the battery is totally incompatible with the makkita battery foot print so its 30 minutes to run down the only battery and several hours to recharge. then the pair of 6ah batteries that look like the real makita were not compatible with the charger I bought as makita compatible. they are close enough mechanicaaly that a 2lb dead blow hammer can seat then on the charger, but the charger then flashes a code that says broken battery. No physical-visible damage from using the hammer but I’m returning both one about 2/3rd discharged as I ran the sander from it for around an hour. The sander works well but its dust collection is nill, nothing in the filter bag for about 6 hours use so far. So sander decent makita compatibility, zilch.

Very nice, with long battery life.
I purchased this quite a while ago. I wanted to give it a good go through before leaving a review. I’ve used it, several times and I have yet to have to charge the battery. Very pleasing surprise. I recommend this product because it works very well and can also be used as a buffer. It comes with buffing pads as well. I recommend this product highly.

Nice and compact sander!
Nice sander just got have not used yet. Powerful motor with 6 speeds. Slimline 21V battery is great does not get in the way as other bulky ones. It measures with battery on 6″ height and 6″ width so easy to move around. Cordless only way to go when doing projects. I could have really used this doing bodywork on car! I used a friend’s Dewalt on drywall patching power is the same (actually this probably has more RPM).

Works well with makita batteries
Charge of The battery that comes with is noto good, but if you have makita batteries works great. I had a Makita sander that died on me after a few hours use (burn motor) and used this one as replacement. So far it is great.
