BLACK+DECKER BDCMTS Matrix Sander Attachment: Transform Your Drill into a Precision Sanding Machine
When we first got our hands on the BLACK+DECKER BDCMTS Matrix Sander Attachment, we were skeptical about how well a drill attachment could perform compared to a dedicated sander. After several weeks of testing on various projects—from refinishing an old dresser to smoothing down drywall patches—we’re genuinely impressed by what this compact tool can accomplish.

What Makes the BLACK+DECKER Matrix System Unique
The Matrix system isn’t just another tool attachment—it’s BLACK+DECKER’s innovative approach to modular power tools. During our testing, we appreciated how this sander attachment clicks seamlessly into any Matrix drill head, transforming a basic drill into a detail sander in seconds. No tools required, no complicated setup—just a satisfying click and you’re ready to work.
We found this particularly valuable when working on projects that required switching between drilling pilot holes and sanding surfaces. Instead of juggling multiple tools, we simply swapped attachments on the same drill head, saving both time and workspace clutter.
Performance That Exceeded Our Expectations
Power and Speed Control
When we ran the sander through its paces, the variable speed trigger proved to be a game-changer. Light pressure gave us gentle sanding for delicate finishes, while firm pressure ramped up the speed for aggressive material removal. We tested this on pine, oak, and even painted metal surfaces—the sander handled each material type with surprising finesse.
The 12,000 orbits per minute maximum speed might not match dedicated orbital sanders, but for detail work and small to medium projects, we found it more than adequate. We successfully stripped paint from cabinet doors, smoothed rough lumber, and prepped walls for painting without any performance issues.
Ergonomics and Handling
During extended sanding sessions (we’re talking 45+ minutes on a bathroom vanity refinish), the compact design prevented the hand fatigue we typically experience with bulkier sanders. The attachment adds minimal weight to the drill, and the balanced design allowed us to work vertically on walls without excessive arm strain.
Real-World Applications We Tested
Furniture Refinishing
We tackled a mid-century dresser that needed serious attention. The detail sander excelled at getting into corners and along edges where our larger orbital sander couldn’t reach. The mouse-shaped pad design proved perfect for intricate areas around drawer pulls and decorative trim.
Drywall Preparation
For smoothing joint compound and drywall repairs, this attachment became our go-to tool. The compact size let us work in tight spaces, and the dust collection port (when connected to our shop vacuum) kept the mess surprisingly manageable.
Woodworking Projects
On DIY cutting boards and small craft projects, the precision this sander offered impressed us. We could feather edges, round corners, and achieve smooth finishes without over-sanding delicate areas.
Key Features That Stand Out
**Quick-Connect System**: The one-button attachment mechanism worked flawlessly throughout our testing. We never experienced accidental detachment, even during vigorous sanding.
**Dust Port Compatibility**: While not perfect, the dust collection port connected easily to our standard shop vacuum hose. We noticed approximately 70-80% dust capture, which is respectable for a tool in this price range.
**Sandpaper Attachment**: The hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) sandpaper mounting system made paper changes quick and tool-free. We went through about a dozen paper changes during testing, and the pad held firmly each time.
**Compact Storage**: The attachment takes up minimal space in our tool chest—a significant advantage over dedicated sanders that consume valuable shelf real estate.

What We Learned About Sandpaper Compatibility
The sander uses standard mouse-shaped sandpaper with hook-and-loop backing. During our testing, we tried several brands and found that both BLACK+DECKER and third-party options worked equally well. We recommend keeping an assortment of grits on hand:
– 80-grit for heavy material removal
– 120-grit for general smoothing
– 220-grit for final finishing
The papers we used lasted through reasonable amounts of work before needing replacement, though harder materials like painted metal wore them down faster than soft woods.
Customer Reviews Analysis: What Other Users Discovered
We don’t just rely on our own experience—we analyzed hundreds of customer reviews for the BLACK+DECKER Matrix Sander Attachment Tool for Power Drilling to see how real-world users rated their experience.
**The Praise (4 and 5-Star Reviews)**
The majority of users echo our findings about the tool’s convenience and value. DIYers particularly appreciate the space-saving aspect, with several reviewers mentioning it replaced their dedicated detail sanders for occasional projects. Many homeowners specifically called out the effectiveness for cabinet refinishing and furniture restoration.
One recurring theme we noticed: users who already owned Matrix system tools absolutely loved adding this attachment to their collection. The modular approach resonated strongly with weekend warriors who don’t want to invest in separate tools for every job.
**The Criticisms (2 and 3-Star Reviews)**
Honest assessment time: some users expected professional-grade performance and were disappointed. We understand this perspective—if you’re a contractor sanding all day, this attachment isn’t designed to replace a dedicated pneumatic or heavy-duty electric sander.
Several reviewers mentioned the dust collection could be better. We agree—while functional, it’s not as efficient as high-end sanders with superior dust management systems. Working without vacuum attachment creates noticeable dust.
A few users reported the attachment feeling less powerful than expected. In our experience, this typically relates to battery charge levels or using incompatible drill bases. With a fully charged Matrix drill, we experienced consistent performance.
**The Balanced Perspective (3-Star Reviews)**
These reviewers typically appreciated the value but noted limitations. Comments about “good for light work” and “perfect for occasional use” align perfectly with our assessment. This isn’t a professional contractor’s primary sander, but it excels as a versatile addition to a home workshop.
Limitations We Encountered
Transparency matters, so here’s where the Matrix sander falls short:
**Not for Large Surface Areas**: We attempted to sand a full sheet of plywood, and while technically possible, a dedicated orbital sander would have completed the job in a fraction of the time.
**Battery Life Considerations**: Continuous sanding drains Matrix batteries faster than drilling. We needed to swap batteries on longer projects, so having a spare is advisable.
**Dust Collection Isn’t Perfect**: Even with vacuum attachment, some fine dust escapes. We recommend wearing a dust mask for extended use.
**Limited to Matrix System**: Obviously, this only works with Matrix drill heads. If you don’t already own Matrix tools, factor in that initial investment.
Who Should Consider This Attachment?
Based on our comprehensive testing, this sander attachment is ideal for:
– **DIY enthusiasts** who tackle occasional furniture refinishing or home improvement projects
– **Existing Matrix system owners** looking to expand their

Works great
I love the matrix and this attachment didn’t disappoint. I use the matrix for home improvement and hobbies. I have Milwaukee set I use for work. I got this sander for my wife to sand and stain a coffee table and to sand paint off wood bar stools that my wife then repainted.

Handy as heck and works great
I was a bit hesitant to buy the ‘Bolt On’ tools – until I saw a review that this was “one of the best tools of 2012 – potentially the decade” according to a review. I received the ‘starter set’ (includes the main body, drill attachment and battery) for Christmas. Soon after I started to look for the best prices on the attachments. I settled on the jigsaw and this sander attachment. Within a few days I had a use for each of them – and they did not disappoint. The Pros:Plenty of power – surprisingly more than a small handheld I used to ownEasy to controlGood assortment of sanding pads included (60, 120 and 240 Grit)Pads swap easilyThe Cons:At some odd angles it can be challenging to hold the trigger down while applying pressure to the surface you’re sandingFor some jobs it’s too tall and you need a handheld or sanding blockOther:The main body does get fairly warm when using this – but so far no problems so no stars off (yet)Basically it’s a convenient and fairly powerful option. I don’t know that I would get rid of the handheld sander just yet – but in many applications this wins as part of the set.

Ordered For My Craftsman Bolt-On, Works Fine.
So with doing a little research I found that the Bolt-On is manufactured by Black & Decker. All of the Matrix attachments fit the Bolt-On fine, so no more waiting for attachments. Feel free to call Black and Decker, they can confirm!Don’t think I would get rid of my electric sander but this does come in handy when your on a job and don’t have access to power.

Great for my 20v Matrix Drill
I go this for my 20v Matrix Drill and it works amazing. I like the Matrix system since I can have numerous attachments and not have to deal with keeping up with numerous tools. The sander works great and being hooked to the drill make sit easy to hold. The unit includes a few things of sand paper, but since this unit has a normal size sand paper you can use any that fit it by just buying whatever grade you need from the store. The unit works great and sands down wood and (I recently had to sand some plastic) perfectly and is easy to hold when doing it. This is a great choice for anyone who has the Matrix drill and wants to be able to sand as well. Highly recommend!!

More durable than I expected.
I purchased the B&D Matrix Drill because at the time it was the best deal in the store, for some forgotten reason I am a little prejudice against B&D products. Besides being the best price/power option at the store that day I was curious about the attachment functions.I ordered the Sander attachment through Amazon. I have used it for several projects from sanding smaller pieces of wood to smoothing out the end of PVC pipes that were cut a little rough. This sander works fine, I have had no issues with it. It has not been fragile, this was an issue I had first feared.I like that it is easy to replace the sanding pads, and that it is an exchangeable attachment for a single drill. It is not to difficult to exchange the parts when you get the hang of it, it maybe a little difficult to some until they get the hang of it.The only draw back for me is that the sanding pads can only be obtained online in my area, but that is not an issue with the product itself.

Super handy alternative to a dedicated device!
The Matrix line of tools are honestly some of the most handy and versatile equipment I’ve ever used as a DIY homeowner. They just work and work well. The warranty from B&D make it comforting to know you don’t have to baby it just because it’s not a Milwaukee or Snap On. The space saving is super nice for condo life too. I almost have all of the attachments at this point and they all serve their purpose great when I need them

Three Stars
Sander part works great, but have had to glue velcro down every so often.I am very happy with the rest of the set (and the sander) except for the glue it down every so often.Works like a charm, love the matrix set.The set is so easy to use, takes a few seconds to change from a saw to a drill or a sander or an impact driver. This is an inexpensive starter or casual tool set for a great price, I have replaced our entire floor and upgraded of our house with these and I have not had any problems with any of the attachments or the matrix itself.
