hey everyone i'm harley with ohio power
tool and today on right tool for the job we're going to find out which m18
battery is right for you the high output or the original red lithium it's
the high output this is the one you want this one let me explain why let's take a
look at the two main types the newer high output batteries are designed to provide fifty percent
more power and run fifty percent cooler the cell technology of each battery is what makes the
biggest difference in their performance milwaukee uses two types of battery cells the 18650 and the
21700 the number refers to the size of the cell so 18650s measure 18 by 65 millimeter and the
21700s measure 21 by 70 millimeter the high output batteries use the 21700s which are newer and most
commonly used to power larger more powerful tools they're like cars and stuff so the high output
battery packs claim to have more peak power and run cooler for sustained use but that's a new tool
specifically designed to work with these does it change the performance of all fuel tools as well
what about compact tools well we were recently comparing several newer m18 impact wrenches from
the stubby all the way to the one inch d handle but in doing so we found some interesting
results running the tests on the skidmore so back to the big question do the new m18 high
output batteries actually increase power over the original red lithium batteries well in the shop we
have an m18 4.0 battery which is several years old probably very much like our everyday customers
have and also we have the brand new 6.0 high output it was clear right out of the gate the
tools performed very differently with these two battery packs so we ran tests on all four impacts
to see how each might perform with each battery see i told you the m18 high output batteries were
better but it was very interesting to see all the other tools performed significantly better
based solely on the battery now we've always heard the pitch on milwaukee fuel that redlink
is the technology that connects the batteries and the brushless motors to optimize performance
sounds like a lot of marketing speak but this does make us think there's a lot more going on here
than we might have given milwaukee credit for so for our final thoughts this really made it much
more clear that the high output batteries are a good idea for tool performance of course lights
and radios and other m18 tools won't see much performance changes outside of a better runtime
which is still good but it's pretty clear all m18 tools carry the fuel designation are going to be
optimized for the best performance so of course the og red lithiums are still great but why not
add some high outputs to your arsenal batteries if you have any questions or comments on today's
