Another Important Tool for Shipmodeling: The Disc Sander

In the world of shipmodeling, precision and accuracy are crucial for achieving the best results. One of the essential tools used by hobbyists and professionals alike is the disc sander. This versatile, powerful tool can help to improve the accuracy and appearance of your models, providing a professional finish for your work. Today, we will look at two types of disc sanders, an electric and a manual. We will discuss their advantages and disadvantages and offer some tips on how to choose the right sander for you. Let’s begin with the electric disc sander.

Understanding the Electric Disc Sander

An electric disc sander is a popular choice for its power and efficiency. It is also the largest producer of dust, which is an essential factor to consider when using this type of sander. To mitigate this issue, a vacuum cleaner is recommended to use alongside the electric sander.

Advantages of the Electric Disc Sander

One of the main benefits of an electric disc sander for shipmodeling is its capability to handle even large pieces of wood. It can perfectly align angles after being cut by a table saw or create a perfect radius on an end piece. If you decide to build higher quality models, the electric disc sander will undoubtedly make your life easier. You can even sharpen some tools on this type of sander.

Disadvantages of the Electric Disc Sander

Despite its power and capabilities, the electric disc sander does have some drawbacks. One major issue is that it poorly fits small details. To rectify this, you can place a piece of plexiglass to fit the table closer to the sanding disc. Another disadvantage is the protruding hull, which does not allow for working with curved parts easily.

Exploring the Manual Disc Sander

The manual disc sander offers a different set of advantages and disadvantages when compared with the electric sander. Its open sanding disc is an attractive feature that allows you to work more easily with curved parts. Additionally, the manual disc sander comes with a larger table, making it an excellent choice for various tasks.

Advantages of the Manual Disc Sander

A significant benefit of the manual disc sander is its ability to delicately remove soot from laser-cut dies. This is because the sanding speed can be controlled by hand, allowing for a gentler touch when needed. Another fantastic feature of this particular tool is the ability to sand angular and rectangular parts simultaneously, increasing efficiency and precision.

The manual disc sander is also well-assembled and suitable for working with very small details. It comes with a screw to adjust the distance between the sanding disc and the table, providing a customizable work surface suitable for delicate tasks.

Disadvantages of the Manual Disc Sander

One downside of the manual disc sander is its dependence on hand power, which can be tiring for large projects. However, this issue can be mitigated with practice and proper technique.

Additional Features and Devices for the Disc Sander

Some manufacturers of disc sanders offer additional tools and devices that can improve your shipmodeling experience. For example, a repeater can help you create multiple parts of the same length with ease. Additionally, some manual disc sanders produce less dust due to their slower rotation speed, making them suitable for use without a vacuum cleaner.

Additionally, the manual sander’s sanding disc does not heat up during use, meaning that the sandpaper can last much longer, providing further savings and efficiency.

Choosing the Right Disc Sander for Your Shipmodeling Needs

Both electric and manual disc sanders have their advantages and disadvantages. When selecting the right one for you, consider factors such as the size of the projects you will be working on, the level of precision you desire, and your budget. You can find direct links to various disc sanders, such as the Ultimation Modeling Tools Hand-Powered Disc Sander and the PROXXON Disk Sander TG 125/E, in the description under the video.

In conclusion, both electric and manual disc sanders offer unique benefits and drawbacks depending on your specific shipmodeling needs. It’s essential to assess these factors carefully to make the best choice for you. With the correct disc sander in your toolkit, you’ll be able to create stunning ship models with unparalleled precision and accuracy. Happy shipmodeling!

  2. Disc sanders are great if you only ever want to sand the outside of curves… what about the inside?? This is why I prefer an oscillating belt sander.

  3. I believe the Ultimation sander is in a class by itself, especially when using soft woods like Basswood or Balsa. I like that it seems to have a delicate touch and great for working late at night while everyone sleeps. Of course there is a need for a small powered disk sander but the Ultimation seems excellent for small delicate work. Thank you for sharing.

  4. The proxxon tools are nothing special. Made in China, sold by Germans, for German price (over priced). The quality doesn't go beyond the green paint.

  5. the electric one can be easily modified to excel in what it's supposed to do accurately and correctly.

  6. Как заказать инструменты? Спасибо

  7. Olha, muito bom. Prático e útil.
    Grande abraço.

  8. Olha, thanks for the comparative video. As I see it, there is really no advantage to the hand operated sander outside of the low dust factor. The $225 (direct from the manufacturer) variable speed Proxxon will do many more tasks then the $290 hand operated Ultimation (price with repeater accessory). Yes, you might need to do a couple mods to the Proxxon to repeat a fit up and yes the table could be closer but again, you showed a low/no dollar fix. Then, how well can you coordinate turning the no inertial flywheel sanding disc rotation along with trying to accurately feed in delicate stock.

  9. Good comparison! Thx a lot! 👍

  10. Здравствуйте,Ольга! На Ваш взгляд,проксон всё же лучше? Хотя по качеству исполнения,мне ручной больше понравился.Если бы он был электрический…
