Orbital Sander vs. Random Orbit Sander: A Comprehensive Guide

Are you trying to decide which sander is the right choice for your next project? This article will take an in-depth look at the difference between orbital sanders and random orbit sanders, highlighting their features, benefits, and drawbacks to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding the Big Difference between Orbital Sander and Random Orbit Sander

Orbital Sander

An orbital sander is a simpler, cheaper, and older tool. Its square shape allows it to move up against edges and corners, making it suited for tight spaces. The orbital sander moves in a small circular motion around its orbit, which may leave swirl patterns, especially when sanding across the wood grain. The scratch pattern depends on the brand and the material being sanded.

Random Orbit Sander

A random orbit sander, or eccentric sander, moves back and forth in an oscillating manner, without creating distinct pattern marks. This type of sander uses Velcro for fastening and changing the sanding discs. It comes with multiple features like speed adjustment and a micro filter system for efficient dust extraction. Although slightly more expensive, this sander’s performance and versatility make it perfect for various tasks.

Comparing Features and Benefits

Orbital Sander

The square shape of the orbital sander is perfect for sanding corners and edges; it can reach tight areas that other sanders can’t. The lower cost of this tool makes it a suitable option if you are on a budget, and it is perfect for preparing a surface for repainting or sealing.

Random Orbit Sander

The random orbit sander is more versatile and can handle multiple tasks, such as removing material, polishing, and buffing, due to its variable speed control feature. Additionally, it produces fewer visible scratches or marks than an orbital sander. The easy-to-change sanding discs make it more convenient to use, and the efficient dust extraction system keeps the workspace clean.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sander

Budget

Orbital sanders are generally cheaper than random orbit sanders. If you are on a budget, consider purchasing an orbital sander.

Suitable for Corners

If you need a sander specifically for edges and corners, an orbital sander is the better option, as its square shape allows it to reach tight spaces.

Surface Type

When sanding across the wood grain, an orbital sander may leave a swirl pattern. To avoid such marks, opt for a random orbit sander.

Versatility

Random orbit sanders are more versatile than orbital sanders as they can handle multiple tasks, including buffing and polishing, thanks to their variable speed control. If you require a sander for various projects, go for a random orbit sander.

In Conclusion

After comparing the features, benefits, and drawbacks of both orbital and random orbit sanders, you should now have a better understanding of which sander will best suit your needs. While orbital sanders are cheaper and better for edges and corners, random orbit sanders provide versatility and less visible scratches or marks. Ultimately, the choice must be based on the specific requirements of your project and personal preferences.

So, which sander is suitable for you? For me, personally, I find that the random orbit sander is a better choice, as the variable speed function is essential for my woodworking projects. However, your preferences and budget may differ. If you found this comparison helpful, please give it a like and share it with others. 4. Hi, any videos/tips on how to sand countertops? Eg. Quartz countertop. To refinish the surface.

  5. another example of humanity devolving en masse. i use a B&D hand drill from 1980, with a 5" sanding pad. it's getting a bit wobbly after over 40 years, i thought i'd buy an inexpensive sander, but i was dismayed to find there are no simple round, rotary sanders, but all of them have these complicated gear designs which i cannot see lasting 40+ years of use.
if i need to i will replace it with another hand drill and rotary pad. humanity, learn how to use the simple strong tool to get a good result, instead of making inferior tools that will continually break because you believed some stupid thing sold to you.

  6. Thanks mate great stuff 👍

  7. Which one will be good for sanding glass bottle edge?

  8. Thanks for the comparison between the two sanders. I had just purchased 1 orbital sander and 1 rotary sander before I stumbled upon your video. Those sanders are different brand from yours. At first I was considering buying bosch but i was looking for a built in vaccum. So I ended up buying other brand. I'll be using orbital sander primarily on ceiling corners. Thank you. I just sent a support on your channel.

  31. Which is best for prepping a painted wall (drywall) for repainting?

  32. Nice and simple explanation! Thank you, wish all You Tube videos were as simple!

  33. I bought the Ryobi 7000-13000+ rpm 130 watt 125mm orbiter random sander (Bunnings ran out of the Bosch one [funny how they always have a surplus of shit hanging from discount trees on every corner of every aisle yet you often can't find something of quality that you need] "Lowest Qualitie's Just the Beginning!" ) and had a go on varnished table top using diablo 40 – 240 grit. The 40 dug swirls into the wood that I couldn't get rid of in some sections 🙁 even when aggressively hand sanding inline.
I'm not very impressed to be honest but perhaps using it lightly on varnish and paint with suitable high number grit (and many pieces of it) to make the sanding easy and then doing the rest by hand at medium and then light strength.

  34. Wow this is so helpful bro what to choose and thanks for this.
Sending my love and support here see you and keep safe.
