Rikon 2 Inch Orbital Cordless Sander – A Detailed Review

Last week, as I sat at my desk shopping for tools on Amazon, I came across the Rikon 2 Inch Orbital Sander. I instantly knew I had to buy it, and within seconds, it was on its way. In this article, I will cover the pros and cons of this little gem and why it might be worth the investment. If you’re interested in picking one up yourself, the link is in the description.

What is a Rikon 2 Inch Orbital Cordless Sander?

The Rikon 2 Inch Orbital Sander is a 12-volt cordless sander designed to be used for detail work and fine finishing. It is not as powerful as its more expensive counterparts, such as the Mirkas and the Milwaukee, but it does the job I need it to do.

What’s Included in the Package?

When you purchase the Rikon Orbital Sander, you receive a nice hard case to keep it in, as well as everything you need to start using the sander right away. Some of the accessories included in the package are:

  • Sander
  • Battery
  • Charger
  • Sanding discs
  • Contour pads
  • Detail pads

Although the M12 battery does not fit this model, you receive a suitable battery and charger with the sander.

My Experience with the Rikon Orbital Sander

Since receiving the sander, I have used it for multiple tasks around the workshop, such as sanding inside small trays on the CNC, removing glue from surfaces, and polishing wood products with board butter.

I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the sander, especially considering its price point. It is not as powerful as other, more expensive sanders, but it is highly effective for detail work and finishing.

However, there are a few aspects of the sander that could be improved, such as the power button mechanism and the lack of dust collection. Despite these drawbacks, I have found the Rikon Orbital Sander to be an invaluable addition to my workshop.

Comparing the Rikon Orbital Sander to Other Sanders

Unlike random orbit sanders, the Rikon spins in a circle, which means there is minimal vibration and less fatigue on your hand. It also comes with a contour pad, allowing you to sand rounded edges without damaging the surface.

In comparison to an oscillating tool, which sands side to side, the Rikon provides a smoother finish due to its spinning motion. Additionally, it fits in small spaces where larger sanders cannot reach, making it ideal for detail work.

Other Uses for the Rikon Orbital Sander

Besides sanding and polishing, the Rikon Orbital Sander can also be used for other tasks around the house. Some of these tasks include:

  • Polishing epoxy resin
  • Buffing headlights
  • Polishing chrome surfaces
  • Shining shoes
  • Removing rust from tools
  • Applying board butter to wood products

With so many potential uses, the Rikon Orbital Sander is a versatile and worthwhile addition to your tool collection.

Final Thoughts on the Rikon Orbital Sander

Although the Rikon Orbital Sander may not be the best quality tool in my shop, it works extremely well for the tasks I need it to do. For a $100 tool, it offers impressive performance and a multitude of uses. I have been thoroughly impressed with the sander and consider it a game-changing tool.

If you require a detail or fine finish sander and the Rikon fits within your budget, I believe you will not regret your purchase. It has surpassed my expectations, and I find myself using it constantly since I acquired it.

In conclusion, the Rikon 2 Inch Orbital Cordless Sander is an effective, affordable, and versatile tool that is ideal for detail work and fine finishing. I highly recommend giving it a try if you’re in the market for a compact sander that is perfect for smaller tasks and projects.

  2. After watching your video I really want to buy on of these but I can not find them anywhere. Do you know where I could find one?

  3. It seems the tool has failed. It can't be bought anywhere.

  4. Is this better than a Dremel with sand attachments?

  5. I wish I could find one in stock somewhere. I’m worried they have discontinued this?????

  6. I can’t find this sander anywhere, someone please help! Thanks!

  7. Are you going to do a review of the Milwaukee sander? I would love to see the differences between the two

  8. Looking forward to your m12 detail sander thoughts. A lot of people are swearing by this tool as if there are no flaws.

  9. I use the sander attachment that comes with practically every oscilating multi-tool for those areas. I have taken my grinder to a couple of those attachments (I've collected quite a few over the years) to make an even smaller sanding surface. A light touch is key if you don't want to leave marks though.

  10. Check out the Metabo 3 inch ROS. I have found it very powerful and useful for tight spots. A little pricey.

  11. Looks awesome…but I'm not seeing it for sale now. Discontinued maybe? My pneumatic detail sander is a bit too aggressive for some finer sanding needed for woodwork like what you are doing here, and my 5" ros is too big. This tool is probably something I'm past due for owning lol

  12. Hey Matt, I ordered the Rikon from ToolsToday after your review, and I wanted to let you know about it. The sander arrived, and I charged the battery, and it wouldn't start. Tried everything in the manual and finally called Rikon to return. They referred me back to Tools Today, and they then referred me back to Rikon tech support. Spent 1/2 hour w/Rikon tech and determined that the charger was bad (this was a known defect). Rikon said they would contact ToolsToday and begin processing a return and refund. All in all, a bad experience. I guess I should have waited till you reviewed the Milwaukee!!!!!

  13. What's very odd to me is it doesn't come with even one piece of sandpaper. Im glad I ordered an assortment when I ordered the tool.

  14. I use to watch 731 woodworks in the past, but I've quit watching now. The older vids were great and helpful, but now it seems that you are more interested in chasing the almighty dollar by making your vid, in my opinion, infomercials for tools and gadgets that you say we need in our workshops. I know there must be good money from these tool manufacturers wanting you to sell their products, but that is not what got you to where you are today. I get it, make money while you can, but don't forget your roots and what got you to where you are today. No hate, just disappointment on my side.

  15. Just ordered some board butter. Thanks for the discount code

  16. I just purchased both the Rikon 2" Detail Sander and HongWay 300pcs 2 Inches Sanding Discs. Thanks

  17. Well, I bought the sand paper package and I use it with my cordless drill..

  18. Checked on Amazon, out of stock. Tools Today has it on sale for $69.99. Thanks!

  19. Good deal for about $70. I do have small drill driven disks from Ryobi.

  20. About hold long does the battery last before a recharge is needed? Thanks Matt!!

  21. Is it not possible to get a sander bit for your CNC to sand those small parts?

  22. Is it not possible to get a sander bit for your CNC to sand those small parts?

  23. It’s currently on sale at wood craft

  24. Do you ever sell your mallets?

  25. Thanks for sharing it's a good solution I own a rotary tool they have a right angle attachment for it that you can buy a flat disc for detail work and small sections if it's my needs everyone's needs are different

  26. this is exactly what I need. I was hand sanding and it took forever. Thank you.

  27. Your site has apparently now become nothing more than a review site for tools etc. which you may or may not be getting paid to publicise.

Your site was much more interesting and useful to me when you actually did some wood working projects. It would appear to satisfy some of your subscribers but alas is no longer of any interest to me so I will be unsubscribing.

  28. Sadly on Amazon this is showing as out of stock with the tag saying they don't when or if it will come back into stock. I guess everyone saw this and bought them all up lol.

  29. It’s already sold out on Amazon. Sad😢

  30. Thanks for showing this I may need something like this down the line 👊🏻

  31. I actually like this and I can see how it could save a lot of time and money

  32. They make those attachments for cordless drills. Is there a benefit to that unit being specific to sanding?

  33. I can see something like this being great for polishing epoxy coasters.

  34. I bet that's great for turning…

  35. Looks to be perfect for the furniture repair I do. I have wanted something small to do scratch touch-ups. This will allow me to use the 3M pads and buff out a scratch instead of feathering out a large area and re-applying clear. Huge time saver! Just wish there was something similar in the M12 line. Thanks for the review good sir 👍
