DeWalt recently released a new 5 amp hour power stack battery, which is larger and heavier than expected. However, its pouch-style cells likely have a high discharge rate, making its output of amps phenomenal. This 5 amp hour power stack is the same size as a 4 amp hour compact, but thick like the 6 amp hour battery.
The goal of testing this battery is to determine its power output, not its amp hours. Power output will be measured through voltage, with results showing that the more voltage drops, the less cells inside can discharge at a rate that delivers higher amps. Testing will range from 2 amp hour to 15, excluding 12.
Level one on the drill mode with a 3 and 3 8 inch auger bit will be used to test the battery, as well as two 4×4 lumber pieces and a bidimensional lumber. From this, the voltage on the battery will be checked.
Several amps hours will be tested, with the 1.7 amp hour power stack performing well in comparison to the 3 and 4 amp hour compacts. However, the 5 amp hour power stack had the highest power output, reaching low 18s to high 17s for both lumber types. The 9 amp hour Flex volt had the highest resting battery of 21 volts, which cut out at the end of dimensional lumber while producing high 18s.
Though there were slight testing flaws, the 5 amp hour power stack proved to be impressive in power output and size, providing remarkable watt or amp output compared to the 9 amp hour Flex volt. It is ideal for those looking for a smaller, lightweight battery with substantial power output for 20 volt tools. The longevity of the battery and its performance in different environments will be further tested.
In conclusion, this battery is an innovative product from DeWalt that packs quite the punch. Its combination of high power output and small size makes it a must-have for those in search of a reliable, high-performance power tool battery.

… what is dimentual lumber ??? 😮
That's not an auger bit…. 👀
Power stack 1.7 amp 2 pa k on sale today at lowes- $200 comes with free tool up to $230 value.
Noob question I have dcf887 and the dcd795 will 20volts battery fit straight in
I am no pro. But I think when going through the 2x once the blade cut through on one side it seemed to me that the gap in the hole saw was catching on the wood. Also you could see the lean or tilt of the person and saw once it broke though and boom it catches. Either way I dont care. They are all great batteries to me.
Power stack is the way to go eventually all other dewalt batteries will become obsolete and power stack will continue, are they expensive yes, but the flex volt batteries cost too much as well. What dewalt needs to do is stop producing tools that require flex volt batteries and keep pushing power stack batteries since it's a better platform.
Thanks, I was second guessing myself getting the 6ah vs the 5 but it looks like I made the right choice.
What about fuel economy. All I need to do is drive 2 1/2 screws
id like to see a Dewalt Powerstack v Hilti Nuron battery platform. as both have a different way to increase power to the tool.
If the job needs that much power/torque, then I would just whip out the 120v.
Dewalt just needs to come out with a 15Ah power stack flex volt 20V/60V!
My tool box isn’t filled with tools because I bought 2 dewalt batteries…..
Cool test. I would like to see the test done with other cordless tools. The circle saw, jig saw, and grinder would be cool.
I cant wait to see a power stack flex volt battery! That’s gonna be the bees knees
Why did the XR 5.0 perform so poorly
What does the flex battery do to the motor?
Nice line up but I’m not seeing that 10ah hour XR BATTERY that really brings the beans,I’ve had the best result using this 10ah and also the 6ah packed with 21700 cells
Not practical to use flexi on a drill. Better suited for the dropsaw, tracksaw etc. 1st gen powerstack better for smaller skins, 12v compatible??? output is more important that runtime. Recip/sabresaw is a power hungry tool. IMHO 😏
Thank you for schooling the people👍
Great video! Thank you for taking the time to do this and help everyone out
Test metabo 36v ?
I’m disappointed the new 5ah powerstack is the size of the 4 and 6ah batteries. Was hoping they’d be same as old 5ah xr batteries or smaller.
Hi, I have a question for you. Do you have the DCV517 (cordless handheld vacuum) ? If so pls try to shove 5.0 powerstack into it … mine for some reason doesn't work with those batteries and I d like to know why or if its just "me" problem …
Which tools can use on the powerstack battery. The dewalt secutors can they use any batteries also can the powerstack battery be used on this. Thankyou for your help and merry Christmas
Looks like you've got the DCD998 power detect sitting on the bench, judging from the accessory handle. Did you notice if this new powerstack had similar power in that drill compared to the DCD999?
Compare with 6ah flexvolt
Flexvolt tools are beasts.
Finally a milwaukee dude thats not stuck in his ways or not fanboying milwaukee. Learn to give credit where its due. Not everything milwaukee makes is the best.
could this make flexvolt redundant|?
Exactly what I wanted to see. Thanks
Even though the performance is objectively awesome… It's still pretty disappointing they're priced as if they were bending physics despite using technology that started in flip phones. On top of that, they're going to be standardized pouches, meaning they cost less to actually manufacture in scale as all you're doing is stacking them vertically. But reaming every single consumer as if it was a triumph. Going from a cylinder to an elongated, widened pouch – is like expanding the surface area for energy (think a 9mm thin phone next to a 21700/18650, the phone has a 3400mAh pouch cell – number is arbitrary-). It's old technology repackaged into an easier & more space efficient design; yet at a premium as opposed to what it actually should cost. If an engineer or manufacturing professional would shed light on that it'd make everyone see a 2 pk of 5Ah power stacks should cost closer to $200… Not 350-370 & they'd still make profit on it, is the point. Granted, it does look like they're taking the Apple route with it.
The first powerstack should be seen as a BETA/engineering test sample, and throughout all months of "silence", they've really only just been mass producing the pouches or having them manufactured, so at least everyone can expect there'll be no places out of stock lol.
Nice demo I now know what I’m getting for xmas
The only thing is put the gun in 2nd gear. Proof was even the 15 stopped. But I’m still impressed with the power stack and maybe have to get one.
I am still waiting to be able to buy it. I checked yesterday and nothing. :/
Feels like its taking forever. I am avoiding buying any 20v batteries until I can just run these. tool only is cheaper and can run with my 60Vs for now.
Here's my 'two cents':
1) The 5ah PowerStack is way bigger in size & price than expected. I'd rather use my 12ah FlexVolt with the same power & 240% more runtime!!
2) DeWalt should redeem itself by introducing a FlexVolt PowerStack (FlexStack?)!!
He should have included the 12ah FlexVolt in the test lineup!!
The voltage tracking is a great parameter to add in to the physical testing. The older I get the more I want light weight tools that perform. I was hoping the PS 5.0 was going to be smaller than the XR 5.0 but I’ll pick some up next year when they go on sale and see how well they do.
