Why We Were Impressed: First Impressions and Build Quality
The moment we lifted this drywall sander from its packaging, the robust construction was immediately apparent. Unlike flimsy sanders that feel like they might shake apart during operation, the POPULO features a solid housing that inspires confidence. The 810W motor isn’t just a number on the spec sheet—you can feel the power reserves waiting to tackle even the toughest sanding jobs.
During our initial inspection, we appreciated the thoughtful engineering evident in every component. The ergonomic handle design showed that someone at POPULO actually understands what it’s like to sand overhead for extended periods. The weight distribution felt balanced, not top-heavy like some competitors that leave your arms aching after 20 minutes.
Power Performance That Actually Delivers
The 810W, 7A motor is the heart of this machine, and during our testing, it proved more than adequate for professional-grade work. We pushed this sander through various scenarios: removing old popcorn ceilings, smoothing fresh drywall mud, and tackling stubborn imperfections on walls that hadn’t been touched in decades.
What stood out was the consistency of power delivery. Even when applying moderate pressure on uneven surfaces, we never experienced the motor bogging down or stalling—a common frustration with underpowered sanders. The 1800RPM maximum speed handled aggressive material removal when we needed it, while the lower settings provided the finesse required for delicate finishing work.
Six Variable Speeds: More Than Just a Gimmick
We’ll admit to being skeptical about variable speed controls on sanders. Often, they’re marketing features that don’t make much practical difference. The POPULO changed our perspective completely.
During our weeks of testing, we found ourselves genuinely using all six speed settings:
**Speed 1-2:** Perfect for final finishing passes and working near corners where dust control is critical. We used these lower settings when sanding bedroom ceilings, where minimizing disruption was essential.
**Speed 3-4:** Our go-to range for general drywall smoothing. These mid-range speeds offered the ideal balance between material removal and control, making them perfect for 90% of standard drywall work.
**Speed 5-6:** Reserved for aggressive stock removal and dealing with stubborn high spots. When we encountered areas with excess joint compound buildup, these higher speeds saved considerable time and elbow grease.
The speed control dial is conveniently located and easy to adjust even while wearing work gloves—a small detail that made a significant difference during long work sessions.
The Integrated LED Light: A Game-Changing Feature
We’ve tested numerous drywall sanders over the years, but the built-in LED light on the POPULO genuinely impressed us. This isn’t just a novelty feature; it’s a legitimate productivity enhancer that we came to rely on throughout our testing.
The LED illuminates the sanding surface at an angle that highlights imperfections, ridges, and uneven areas that would otherwise be invisible under standard room lighting. During one basement project with particularly poor lighting, this feature alone saved us from multiple rounds of sanding-and-checking with a work light.
Even in well-lit rooms, the LED helped us achieve professional-grade finishes by revealing subtle surface irregularities that become painfully obvious once paint is applied. The light positioning is thoughtfully designed to minimize shadows while providing clear visibility of the work area.

Vacuum Attachment System: Dust Control That Actually Works
Let’s be honest—dust is the worst part of any drywall project. We’ve worked with sanders that claim dust collection but essentially just blow fine powder throughout the entire house. The POPULO’s vacuum attachment system represents a significant step forward in practical dust management.
During our testing, we connected the sander to a standard shop vacuum (9-gallon capacity). The vacuum attachment hose connected securely without any makeshift adapters or duct tape solutions. The seal remained tight throughout extended sanding sessions, even when working overhead.
In terms of actual dust capture, we estimate the system caught approximately 85-90% of generated dust when the shop vacuum was running. This isn’t the 99% capture rate that some manufacturers exaggerate about, but it’s honest, real-world performance that makes a dramatic difference in cleanup time and air quality.
We conducted one room with the vacuum system and one similar-sized room without it. The difference was stark: the room with active dust collection required about 30 minutes of cleanup, while the room without took nearly two hours of sweeping, vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces.
Extended Reach and Maneuverability
The POPULO drywall sander shines when tackling ceilings and upper walls—traditionally the most challenging surfaces for DIYers and pros alike. The extension pole (which telescopes smoothly) allowed us to comfortably reach 9-foot ceilings without a ladder for most work.
What impressed us was the head articulation. The sanding pad pivots and adjusts to maintain flat contact with the surface, even at awkward angles. This prevented the gouging and uneven sanding that occurs when a rigid pad catches an edge.
We tested the maneuverability extensively on a vaulted ceiling project with multiple angles and transitions. The POPULO navigated these challenges admirably, maintaining consistent contact and pressure across varying surfaces. The pivot mechanism felt robust—not loose or sloppy like cheaper sanders—yet moved freely enough to follow surface contours naturally.
Ergonomics and User Fatigue
Drywall sanding is physically demanding work, especially overhead applications. We deliberately conducted extended sanding sessions (2-3 hours continuously) to evaluate how the POPULO performs when fatigue becomes a factor.
The ergonomic handle design deserves specific praise. The grip angle positions your wrist naturally, reducing strain during overhead work. The handle diameter accommodates various hand sizes comfortably, and the rubberized coating provided secure grip even when our hands were dusty or sweaty.
Weight-wise, the sander feels substantial without being burdensome. At approximately 7-8 pounds (without extension), it’s manageable for extended periods. The weight actually works to your advantage when sanding ceilings, as gravity helps maintain consistent pressure against the surface without excessive arm effort.
After three-hour sessions, we experienced typical muscle fatigue but none of the wrist pain or shoulder strain that poorly balanced sanders often cause. This makes the POPULO viable for professional contractors who need to work full days without debilitating fatigue.
What the Upgraded Version Brings to the Table
POPULO markets this as an “upgraded version,” so we investigated what improvements distinguish it from earlier iterations. Based on our research and hands-on experience, the key enhancements include:
**Improved Motor Durability:** The 810W motor features enhanced cooling and brush design for extended lifespan. During our testing,

Great product – Greatly reduced both the sanding and clean-up
I’m a DIY’er and after hand sanding some walls where I had done patch work in preparation for repainting, I decided it was worth trying an electric drywall sander. I chose the Populo because it received high ratings and had a built-in vacuum system. I found the sander to do a very good job of smoothing out the walls, I eventually settled in on the higher rpm speeds after I became familiar with the sander. I was exceedingly impressed with the vacuum system. From reading reviews I thought it would be best to connect to a shop vacuum to minimize the dust. I used the adapters supplied with the sander and found it to do a surprisingly good job of keeping the dust down. It was successful in vacuuming nearly 100% of the dust! This alone makes it worth the price. I was also very impressed with the lighting system which made it very easy to determine areas where extra sanding was needed. Finally, I also liked the portability of the system. It folded and could easily be stowed in the bag supplied with the sander. I highly recommend this product for drywall sanding.

Great tool for the diy’er
Purchased this product and when I received it I noticed the hose was missing. I then contacted Populo via email to see if they could send me a replacement hose. They contacted me back within 12 hours and by the 24 hour mark a replacement was being shipped. The power sander is great for what it is. I am currently using it to knock down painted over textured ceilings. It does become heavy after prolonged use. The dust collection is good imo but I also have it attached to a shop vac. The led lights are very bright and help out a lot. I wish the power cord was 3’ longer. All in all 5 stars for time saved, easy setup and use and great customer service.

It is somewhat heavy but works well with a vacuum attached.
It is somewhat heavy but works well with a vacuum attached. I see some say it doesn’t suck up any dust, but I didn’t expect it to with just the bag. I attached it to an old bagged vacuum and it collects probably 50-75+% of the dust. Nothing in my view, when it comes to drywall sanding, will collect all of it and I am more than happy how much it does pick up. Just need to be sure the bad is empty and not crimped up. The bags weigh probably around 10+ lbs when I change them out. at only half full. After half full it doesn’t grab as much dust. The LED light is great for ceilings, I’m doing 700sq’ of ceiling right now. With just construction lights, it really helps let you see where you are working at the time. It is somewhat heavy and even a young buck would eventually get tied due to it’s weight but it makes much faster work than doing it by hand. I skim coated, many times, a popcorn ceiling in my house.so a good size job for a semi handi capped guy at 60yo and beat the heck. It is really a 3 Star since it delivers what it says, but having done this before I upped it up 1 Star since it makes such a large area easier to do and worth the purchase. Can’t speak to longevity on it since I hope I don’t have to do this again, ever. I’m not done yet, so if it breaks, I will update this.

Too heavy uh bless your a body builder
I initially was going to give this item 2 stars but then thought well it worked perfectly, it is just way way way too heavy for someone not used to this type work. To hold it up to the ceiling takes major muscles that this old gal no longer has! So it’s a great product they should find a way for the motor to be closer to you so your not holding that weight above your head

Electric drywall sander
Installation was easy and forward, not much to install. I had a problem in beginning when I first tried this product, the handle will not close in the handle knob, very loose. I contacted the seller and they helped me figured the problem. From what I understand was make sure to use a screw driver to screw the knob area so it will close tight. Manual didn’t clarify that. The weight of this sander is medium weight, not too light or weight. The size of this sander is long. Suction so far is working well especially it come with dust collector, helps reduce dust all over the place. Quality is decent, never tried other products, so I can’t make any comparison. Overall, not bad, worth the money.

Vacuum attachment DOES NOT WORK!!!
The sander works great. However, the vacuum attachment doesn’t work at all. It took longer to clean the dust off of everything than it did to do the sanding.

Polishing Machine
You will need a break after 20 minutes, this can be solved by placing the motor in the handle area rather than the head. It is a little difficult to empty the dust bag but that is ok, about once an hour. You will love how smooth your walls are but you will need a massage to relax your shoulders, have used other drywall sanders and this is great value for money. Great machine, sands drywall very well and the built in vacuum is great~

Gets it done!
Worked well and got the job done — we own a 60s Ranch house with bumpy texture all over the ceilings and walls, not quite popcorn, but after years of many coats of paint the bumps had turned into little spikes that cobwebs and dust loved to cling to in a matter of days! It was driving me crazy, so when painting time came for the laundry room I decided to risk it all and do the tough job of sanding down our bumpy walls. The machine is a little tricky to get the handle together (I had to loosen a screw as well as the adjustable clamp on the handle to get it together, but after that all was well). The light near the head is a plus, sanding is pretty quick but you will get arm fatigue. I’m 5’4″ woman and regularly lift 50lbs, I could manage but after about 5 minutes I had to give my arms a break — kind of like doing sets of reps at the gym. It did take me a couple hours to finish sanding the walls and ceiling of 10×8′ room, and I had to use a small hand sander for corners, but the effort was worth it! No more hideous texture, bumps and spikes!! If you’re doing a wall with paint it will gum up a bit on the sandpaper, just pause and peel off as you go and maybe order some additional sandpaper sheets as this size may not be carried at local hardware store. Overall I would recommend this machine — now to tackle our bathroom, and hall…and kitchen…bedrooms?
