If you’ve ever finished a drywall sanding job looking like you walked through a dust storm—while your lungs feel just as bad—you know the problem. Traditional drywall sanders create clouds of fine dust that settle on everything, require constant cleanup, and make breathing protection absolutely mandatory. After testing dozens of sanding solutions on residential and commercial projects, we put the POPULO 810W Electric Drywall Sander through its paces to see if it could deliver on its promise of cleaner, faster finishing work.

We ran this sander through multiple scenarios over three weeks: ceiling texture removal in a two-story foyer, wall finishing in new construction, and patch repair work in occupied homes. The combination of an 810W motor with integrated vacuum attachment caught our attention, especially at this price point. Here’s what we found after putting serious hours on this upgraded version.

Bottom line up front: This sander significantly reduced our cleanup time and dust exposure, though it’s not completely dust-free. For contractors and serious DIYers tackling drywall finishing without investing in premium dust extraction systems, it delivers solid performance where it matters most.

Why the POPULO Electric Drywall Sander Stands Out

The integrated LED light initially seemed like a gimmick until we used it on our first ceiling job. Working overhead, especially in corners and areas with inconsistent lighting, the LED illuminates sanding marks and imperfections you’d otherwise miss until the paint goes on. We caught several spots during our test that would have required touch-ups later—this feature alone saved us time on callbacks.

The 6-variable speed control (ranging up to 1800 RPM) gives you genuine versatility we didn’t expect in this price range. We started at speed 2 for initial rough sanding on heavily textured ceilings, then dialed down to speed 1 for final passes on patched walls. Higher-end models often offer similar control, but they cost two to three times more. The speed adjustment dial is positioned where your thumb naturally rests, so you can adjust on the fly without stopping work.

What genuinely surprised us was the vacuum attachment’s effectiveness. Connected to a standard shop vac (we tested with both a 6-gallon and 12-gallon model), it captured approximately 85-90% of dust at lower speeds. That’s not the 95%+ you’d get from a Festool system, but it’s dramatically better than sanding without extraction. The dust that does escape is fine particulate that mostly settles on the immediate work surface rather than creating room-wide clouds.

The extending pole design telescopes from roughly 38 inches to 71 inches, allowing us to comfortably reach 10-foot ceilings without a ladder for most passes. Compared to the WEN 6377 we’ve used previously, the POPULO felt more stable at full extension—there’s less wobble when applying moderate pressure overhead.

Key Features & Specifications

  • 810W (7A) Motor: Provides consistent power at all speed settings without bogging down under pressure. This is sufficient for residential drywall work; we never felt it lacking torque even on textured ceiling removal.
  • 6 Variable Speeds (up to 1800 RPM): Speed 1-2 for final finishing and delicate work; Speed 3-4 for standard sanding; Speed 5-6 for aggressive material removal. The range covers everything from skim coat smoothing to popcorn ceiling removal.
  • Vacuum Attachment Port: Fits standard 1.25-inch shop vac hoses (the most common size). The connection is friction-fit rather than locking, which we’ll discuss in the cons section.
  • Integrated LED Work Light: Positioned to illuminate the sanding surface directly ahead of the pad. Genuinely useful for spotting imperfections, not just a marketing feature.
  • Telescoping Handle: Extends from approximately 38″ to 71″ (measurements taken with sanding head attached). Locks securely at any length with a twist-lock collar.
  • 9-inch Sanding Head: Uses standard 9-inch drywall sanding discs with hook-and-loop (velcro) backing. The pad size is industry-standard, making replacement discs easy to source.
  • Automatic Dust Brush System: Internal brushes sweep dust toward the vacuum port as the pad rotates, improving extraction efficiency.
  • Weight: Approximately 8.5 lbs with pole at minimum extension (our measurement). Feels balanced but does create arm fatigue during extended overhead work—we’ll address this reality below.

Hands-On Performance Testing

Test 1: Popcorn Ceiling Removal (400 sq ft foyer with 18-foot ceiling)
We started at speed 5 with 60-grit paper, working in 3-foot sections. The sander removed textured ceiling material efficiently, though we needed to make multiple passes on areas with thicker texture. Dust capture was around 80% at this higher speed—noticeably better than sanding without extraction, but we still needed floor protection. The extending pole handled the high ceiling, though we used a 6-foot ladder for the very peak sections. Total time: 6 hours including setup and cleanup. Previous jobs without dust extraction typically required an additional 2-3 hours of cleanup.

Test 2: New Construction Wall Finishing (12 rooms, approximately 3,200 sq ft of wall surface)
This is where the sander excelled. Working at speed 2-3 with 120-grit paper for final passes after taping and mudding, the dust capture improved to roughly 90%. The LED light helped us identify ridges and imperfections from the taping process that would have telegraphed through paint. We averaged about 400 square feet per hour, which matches our experience with the DeWalt DWE7402DI we’ve used on commercial jobs. The POPULO costs $100+ less.

Test 3: Patch Repairs in Occupied Residence
This test revealed the sander’s real value for working in finished homes. We repaired several large patches (2×3 feet) in a living room with furniture covered but not removed. At speed 1 with 150-grit paper, dust capture was excellent—minimal cleanup required beyond vacuuming the immediate work area. The homeowner commented that previous patch jobs had resulted in fine dust settling throughout the house for days. The vacuum attachment made this job feasible without extensive prep work.

Motor Performance: The 810W motor maintained consistent speed under normal working pressure across all tests. We never experienced bogging or stalling, even during aggressive texture removal. The motor does generate noticeable heat during extended use (45+ minutes of continuous operation), but it never triggered thermal shutdown during our testing.

Handling and Ergonomics: At minimum extension, the sander feels well-balanced for wall work. Extended overhead for ceiling work, the 8.5-lb weight becomes noticeable after 15-20 minutes. We rotated between two team members on the ceiling removal project to prevent fatigue. The handle grip is rubberized and comfortable, though it would benefit from a secondary support grip for two-handed operation on extended sessions.

What We Liked (Pros)

Effective Dust Collection That Actually Works: The vacuum attachment isn’t just cosmetic—it genuinely captures 80-90% of dust when connected to an adequate shop vac. This transforms drywall sanding from a whole-house contamination event into a manageable task. We could work in occupied homes without creating disaster-level cleanup situations.

LED Light Delivers Real Value: We initially dismissed this as a gimmick, but the LED proved invaluable for quality control. It creates a raking light across the surface that reveals sanding marks, ridges, and low spots you’d otherwise miss. We caught imperfections during sanding rather than after priming, which saved materials and time on every job.

Variable Speed Range Handles Multiple Applications: The 6-speed control provides genuine versatility. Speed 1-2

Great product – Greatly reduced both the sanding and clean-up
I’m a DIY’er and after hand sanding some walls where I had done patch work in preparation for repainting, I decided it was worth trying an electric drywall sander. I chose the Populo because it received high ratings and had a built-in vacuum system. I found the sander to do a very good job of smoothing out the walls, I eventually settled in on the higher rpm speeds after I became familiar with the sander. I was exceedingly impressed with the vacuum system. From reading reviews I thought it would be best to connect to a shop vacuum to minimize the dust. I used the adapters supplied with the sander and found it to do a surprisingly good job of keeping the dust down. It was successful in vacuuming nearly 100% of the dust! This alone makes it worth the price. I was also very impressed with the lighting system which made it very easy to determine areas where extra sanding was needed. Finally, I also liked the portability of the system. It folded and could easily be stowed in the bag supplied with the sander. I highly recommend this product for drywall sanding.
