Ridgid R8606B Cordless Random Orbit Sander Review: Professional-Grade Performance Without the Cord

There’s nothing worse than dragging an air hose across a freshly stained deck or fighting with extension cords while trying to sand kitchen cabinets. After testing the Ridgid R8606B GEN5X 18-Volt cordless random orbit sander on multiple job sites over the past three months, we’ve found it eliminates these frustrations while delivering surprisingly consistent power that rivals our corded sanders.

We put this tool through its paces across various applications—from refinishing hardwood floors to auto body prep work and furniture restoration. The question we wanted to answer: Can a cordless random orbit sander truly replace corded models for professional use, or is it just a convenience tool for light-duty work?

Here’s what we discovered: The Ridgid R8606B delivers legitimate professional-grade performance with the freedom of cordless operation, but it’s not without some trade-offs that might matter depending on your specific needs.

Why the Ridgid R8606B Cordless Random Orbit Sander Stands Out

After running this sander alongside our Bosch and DeWalt corded models, three features immediately set the R8606B apart from the competition.

The GEN5X brushless motor technology is the real game-changer here. We ran continuous sanding tests on oak flooring for 45-minute intervals, and the motor never bogged down or showed heat-related performance drops. Compare that to the older brushed cordless sanders we’ve used that would lose power after 20 minutes of heavy use. The brushless design also means virtually zero maintenance—no brushes to replace after 50 hours like older models.

Variable speed control from 7,000 to 12,000 OPM gives you genuine versatility. We started at lower speeds when working with veneer (where aggressive sanding would burn through in seconds) and cranked it up to 12,000 OPM for stripping old paint off pine. The dial is easy to adjust with one hand, even while wearing gloves—a small detail that matters when you’re up on a ladder.

The grip-zone overmold might sound like marketing fluff, but after six-hour refinishing sessions, our hands weren’t cramping like they do with our old Porter-Cable. The ergonomics are legitimately well-designed, with the weight balanced perfectly for vertical surfaces. We spent an entire afternoon sanding doors hung in their frames and never experienced the arm fatigue that typically comes with that job.

What surprised us most? The dust collection actually works. We’ve used cordless sanders where the dust port is basically decorative, but the R8606B with a shop vac attached captured roughly 85-90% of dust when sanding MDF—one of the messiest materials to work with.

Key Features & Specifications

  • 18-Volt GEN5X Brushless Motor: Delivers more runtime and power than brushed motors while eliminating maintenance needs. In practical terms, you’ll get through more work per battery charge and the tool will last longer.
  • 5-Inch Sanding Pad: The industry-standard size means you’re not locked into proprietary sandpaper. We used standard 5-inch 8-hole hook-and-loop discs from multiple brands without issues.
  • Variable Speed: 7,000-12,000 OPM (orbits per minute): Lower speeds for delicate work and finish sanding, higher speeds for aggressive material removal. Most of our work happened in the 9,000-10,000 range.
  • 3/32-inch Orbit Diameter: This random orbital pattern eliminates swirl marks that you’d get from a standard palm sander, crucial for finish work.
  • Integrated Dust Collection Port: Fits standard 1-1/4 inch vacuum hoses. The sealed bearing housing prevents dust from entering the motor, extending tool life.
  • Tool-Only Design: No battery or charger included. Only makes sense if you’re already invested in the Ridgid 18V platform.
  • Weight: 4.2 lbs (tool only): With a 4Ah battery installed, total weight hits about 5.5 lbs—lighter than most corded 5-inch sanders we’ve tested.

Hands-On Performance Testing

Hardwood Floor Refinishing: We used the R8606B to sand 250 square feet of red oak flooring that needed refinishing. Starting with 60-grit paper at full speed, the sander removed the old polyurethane finish efficiently, though noticeably slower than our corded Bosch 5-inch (we estimate about 20% longer). The critical advantage? No cord management in a furnished room where we had to work around furniture. With a 4Ah battery, we got approximately 35-40 minutes of continuous runtime at high speed before needing a swap.

Cabinet Refinishing: This is where cordless truly shines. We refinished 12 kitchen cabinet doors, working through 80-grit, 120-grit, and 220-grit progressions. The freedom to move around the workspace without managing cords cut our setup time significantly. The variable speed proved essential—we ran at about 8,000 OPM for the final 220-grit pass to avoid burning the maple. Total battery consumption: one 4Ah battery for all 12 doors through all three grits.

Auto Body Prep: We tested the R8606B on body filler and primer work on a truck bed panel. At maximum speed with 80-grit, it handled the work competently but required more passes than our pneumatic DA sander. The cordless convenience was valuable in a crowded garage, but professionals doing high-volume auto body work would likely want more aggressive cutting power.

Deck Restoration: We stripped and refinished 120 square feet of weathered cedar decking. The cordless design eliminated the extension cord tangle that usually plagues outdoor projects. However, we burned through three 4Ah batteries for the complete job—make sure you have multiple batteries charged for larger outdoor projects. The dust collection worked poorly outdoors without vacuum attachment, as expected.

One unexpected discovery: The motor doesn’t stall easily. We deliberately applied excessive pressure during testing (the kind that would bog down lesser sanders), and the R8606B maintained consistent speed. The brushless motor clearly has reserves of power that aren’t fully tapped during normal operation.

What We Liked (Pros)

Genuine Cordless Freedom: This isn’t just a convenience—it fundamentally changes how you work. We completed an entire staircase refinishing project (14 treads, multiple balusters) without relocating extension cords once. The time savings and reduced frustration are real and measurable.

Consistent Power Delivery: Unlike older cordless sanders that would gradually lose power as the battery depleted, the R8606B maintains full speed until the battery hits critical levels. There’s no performance degradation—it runs strong, then stops. The brushless motor deserves credit here.

Excellent Ergonomics for Extended Use: After using this sander for 4-6 hour sessions, we experienced significantly less hand fatigue compared to our reference tools. The grip design and weight distribution are clearly engineered by people who actually use sanders professionally.

Effective Dust Collection: When connected to a shop vac, this sander captured more dust than we expected from a cordless tool. The sealed design also means dust isn’t getting into the motor housing—a common failure point on cheaper sanders.

Standard 5-Inch Pad Compatibility: You’re not locked into expensive proprietary sandpaper. We used Diablo, 3M, Norton, and generic 8-hole discs interchangeably

    Works great!
This is a little powerhouse of a sander. Can use it for long periods without it getting too heated. The attached vacuum works really well for catching all those fine dust particles. Would for sure recommend this sander.

    Pricey but works great.
Rigid tools are priced a little high in my opinion. They work well and the batteries are all compatible between the 18v power tools, but I just don’t get why they are priced the way they are. Still, they work great and I have a bunch. This sander fits all those descriptions. It was a little much to spend but I use it a ton. It does seem to run the batteries down fairly quickly but if you have a couple to use, you can charge one while you use the other. I like the Velcro pad attachment—makes changing the sand paper quick and easy. The little dust collector is simple to use and empty when it’s full. I’m also surprised at how comfortable this is to run. My hands do not get overly fatigued when I use this.

So far, so good, although I burned out the motor on the cabled version of this, (confession) no doubt in part due to sanding drywall, including fast-set plaster, which is very corrosive. The vacuum port of this guy hooked up to a shop vac actually works, compared to other brands (Milwaukee, you listening?). It’s all about sanding drywall! Now, if they would just come up with a corner-cat shaped, cordless reciprocating/jitter-bug version with working vacuum port (Rigid, you listening?)!Ryobi has the cordless corner cat, but it does not have a vacuum port, although their cabled version does (Ryobi, you listening?)! Its all about sanding drywall! Did I say that yet?

    Descent battery sander.
Very back heavy with 4amp battery, overall good for short use but too heavy to use for long periods or finesse sanding because of weight.
